JPG to PNG Conversion
Files ending in .JPG and .PNG are image formats containing visual data, such as photos, illustrations, screenshots, and other media types.
JPG files (also known as JPEGs) differ from PNG files in that JPGs are lossy, meaning they undergo compression that reduces quality. When creating a JPG, the level of compression can be chosen, typically resulting in higher quality images having larger file sizes, and more compressed images occupying less storage space.
On the other hand, PNG files are lossless and retain all image quality without compression. Additionally, PNGs support transparency, which JPGs do not. This feature is useful for overlaying images. However, PNGs do not support CMYK color spaces, making them less suitable for printing purposes.
Why Convert JPG to PNG?
The primary reason to convert JPG files to PNG is to gain transparency support. If you have an image with significant white space you wish to edit out, you won't be able to with a JPG, as every pixel must contain color information, typically filled with black or white.
Since PNGs are not compressed, uploading them to a service that compresses images will maintain their original quality. This is beneficial for preserving the integrity of specific images.
However, be cautious when converting JPG to PNG if you plan to print the image. As PNG files lack CMYK information, printing them can be challenging. It's advisable to retain the original JPG for potential future printing needs.
